‘Painting’
Creative Minds
I’ve mentioned before that Luke loves to paint.
He favours painting on canvas, hats and t-shirts but will paint paper, rocks and whatever else he can creatively splash some colour on. His love for art and painting is even one of the initial reasons we started his little company, LIVN&GIVN.
Standing in my kitchen this evening, I looked at Luke’s birch tree on canvas (pictured above) that hangs in our living room. I started thinking about the other beautiful art I own… that I’ve yet to hang. I also thought about art that’s on my list to buy one day.
With so many incredible artists in the world, it’s hard to choose favourites. Besides Luke of course, each of these next few, hold a special place in my heart and home:
- My brother Reynold Gabriel — One day I will be able to showcase his work. Detailed and animated, he has an affinity and talent for drawing the supernatural, anime an creatures of all kinds. He is incredible. Site-TBA
- The late and great Chili Thom —One of the kindest people I had the privilege of calling a friend, Chili’s art will leave you with a sense of awe and wonder. I have ‘The Dawn Of Hope’ in print in my dining room but would really like to surround my entire home with his work. Just looking at his pieces you feel free, relaxed and for me…at home with the mountains and the water. Explore his site -https://chilithom.com
- Aurel Schmidt — Aurel is one of my oldest friends. I think I spent every weekend at her house from grade 1 to grade 9 and was at her place for a sleepover the Mother’s Day my Mom passed away. Even though we don’t talk much these days and she lives in New York most of the time, Aurel will always hold a special place in my heart. Check her out- http://www.aurelschmidt.com
- Raven Zeller — Rave. I wasn’t always a huge fan of abstract type painting but you can’t not love it after seeing how she paints. Raven is a rare gem and an amazing mother, wife and person. The colours she uses, the choice of mixed media…with glitter…all of it…is just so fab. Another artist I want to cover my house with their work. Fun fact- our husbands share the same birthday. Fall in love with her art here-https://ravenzeller.com
- My Uncle Dave George — He can literally paint replicas of anyone or anything and you think they are a photograph. Beyond generous with sharing his talent with others, Uncle Dave is known to surprise family and friends with honouring originals just because he is who he is. He doesn’t have a website (unless I don’t know it).
- My late friend Julie Witten-Land —Julie went to be with the LORD after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. I knew Julie through church and our kid’s school though we first met at the Butterdome Christmas Craft Sale in Edmonton. She was kind, a true champion of hope, perseverance, giving back to others and sharing Jesus’ love. She also enjoyed working with various mediums -https://saltedstudio.com
- Roy Henry Vickers — I don’t know Roy but when my family of four visited Tofino two years ago, Jeff and I bought a lot of his stuff. Though we have yet to hang our purchases, there are easily more we considered bringing home. It’s bright, thought-provoking, colourful and we obviously appreciate all Indigenous artwork- https://royhenryvickers.com
- Jessica Treger — A long time peep, I didn’t even know Jess painted a lot until the last 5 years or so. He style is slightly dark yet soft and beautiful. You will see a lot of skulls, portraits, bones and nature throughout her work. A local Kamloopsian, check out and support Jess here- https://www.jessicatregerart.com
