‘Popcorn’

A Favourite Snack

--

A moment ago, when shovelling a palmful of salted BOOM CHICKA POP into my mouth, I figured I’d write about one of North America’s favourite snacks…well, one of our favourite snacks.

When I was little a bunch of us girls would regularly go to our friend Aurel’s house for sleepover parties.

Her mom was eating clean, all-natural and organic before it was even a ‘thing’ and people went so far as to consider her ways weird for the time (since it was in the middle of the 90’s after all).

Us little girls didn’t. We loved her cooking, her garden, her baking and being at their home. Almost everything she made was hand-picked from her garden and she only bought stuff from the health food store…The Zone that was downtown Kamloops at the time.

I’m so glad I learned many things from her and the way she processed and harvested food. I wish I had learned more.

Besides dressing up and having dance parties to Billy Idol and The Bangles, one of us getting our underwear frozen for falling asleep first was a common event each weekend.

There were few other staples that made those amazing weekends what they were; eating carob puffed-wheat squares, Knox Blox (chilled extra-firm jello blocks cut into shapes), the homemade dried fruit, organic juice gummy berries, popcorn with Spike and playing hide and seek outside in the dark.

All of those I have continued to this day in one form or another and those memories offer so many fun ideas to do with our boys.

I’ve always liked popcorn but that real-butter & Spike-seasoned popcorn that we had at the sleepovers were next level. It’s a regular snack food around our house now. You can buy Spike at the health food store or at certain grocery stores…I highly recommend it…but warning, you may not ever go back to regular stuff.

Other all-time favourites are Kernels flavoured popcorn, any kettle corn, homemade caramel corn and definitely Cretors Chicago Mix. If there’s a Costco bag in the house, it’s all over for me.

Fitting of the history, although popcorn was found in ancient Peruvian tombs dating back 1000 years, Charles Cretor is credited for the popular movie-watching treat it is today. He built the first popcorn-popping machine in 1885.

Here’s a short blurb for those interested:

Happy Sunday, Happy Snacking,
