‘Sew What?’

Here Goes Nothing…Learning As We Go!

--

I grabbed a standard roll of white Gutermann thread, my rose-printed flannel material and to the till we went.

Yes, the grade 9 boxer project.

With out too many scissor and needle injuries, I completed the task and was quite proud of my boxers, actually. I’m forgetting what exactly happened but soon after I brought them home, they ripped or had to be thrown out for some reason. Bummer — they were my favourite.

Learning to sew has always been on my life to-do list. Although these days when all said and done, it’s often more expensive to create items yourself, the quality and love into is well worth it.

Many of friend’s were in dance and some of their moms were amazing seamstresses. Some of the coolest Halloween costumes, dress-up outfits and pyjamas came from their houses.

We have a family friend who used to make me figure skating dresses when I was little. She put so much time and care into helping me with them and many other designs. To this day I am so grateful for her.

From those points forward, I have been keen to learn as an adult. For various reasons, it hasn’t panned out so far though I’m determined to learn and be better.

Fast forward to today, figuring out private labelling our LIVN GIVN apparel on our own has been a great lesson. Both financially, logistically and legally. Who knew there are so many legal/importing/material/classification etc. issues to consider about a ‘simple’ Tee-shirt?…especially kids/youth apparel.

But we’d rather go about things as correctly as we possibly can and know.

Additionally, costs to have a patch or label attached to a garment can be quite pricey at the shops. Thus, certain tasks we decided to take on our selves for the main purpose of learning and we also hope to save a few pennies. Time and numbers will tell.

Has anyone ever tried that Magic Stitch handheld sewing ‘machine’ or similar? All we are needing is to do about a half to an inch straight line stitch. We’re always open to any suggestions or if you know someone who is reasonably priced for that particular task, we’re all ears!

(PS: We’ve got quotes from almost everywhere here in town…maybe we’re missing somewhere?)

Thanks friends,
