‘The Competitive Life’

“If You Ain’t First, You’re Last” — Ricky Bobby

Sigh…that quote is kinda true.

Competing in sports has it’s ups and downs and tonight sure was a tough one for the Chiefs.

Gotta hand it to Brady, at 43 years young doing his thing, he crushed that game. Admittedly though, it was hard to watch the red #15 limp around and repeatedly get pummeled, but it was a well-deserved win for the Buccaneers.

In school I played soccer, volleyball, a bit of basketball and sometimes made the 4x100 Districts team. Independently, competitive figure skating consumed a lot of my time, physical determination and emotions.

Sometimes the teams I played on won Gold, and sometimes we walked away with Silver. Regardless of how well we did in the season and the fact that second place is still great, earning that second place, well….sucks.

It’s like watching team Canada play junior hockey each year (sorry guys!)

Often it would be better to just play for 3rd, take that win and feel good about it (as it always does) than to come in at number two and suffer like you lost the whole year.

And anyone who’s been there, understands what I’m talking about.

It truly is an amazing feeling taking a big win with your team or stepping on a podium to receive that Gold medal around your neck.

For some odd reason, however, it feels like more of a doozy when losing with a team. Everyone carries the weight for each other and often someone messed up and feels badly. When you’re competing solo, you only have yourself to answer to if you didn’t show up for the task at hand.

All in all, both of those scenarios sting for a while and then you (hopefully) get to try again and come back better and stronger the next time or year.

So while we didn’t end up keeping the Lombardi in Kansas, Mahomes has many years ahead of him and I’m already looking forward to fall.
